Common questions

How does the game work?

Five lots a day, each with its price hidden. You get one guess per lot, and you are scored on how far off you were rather than on getting it exactly right. Everybody in the world gets the same five lots on the same day, and they come from the date itself, so there is no server and no account.

Why is my score a percentage, and why is lower better?

Your score is the average distance between your guess and the real price, as a percentage of the real price. Guessing $200 on a $100 lot and guessing $50 on a $100 lot are the same miss. Zero percent is a perfect round.

I think one of the prices is wrong.

Tell us. Every lot in the game carries a note saying where its number came from and when it was last checked, and both are shown to you on the reveal for exactly this reason. Email support@thebook.ltd with the puzzle number and the lot, and we will re-check it.

What does the subscription buy?

The archive: every past daily puzzle, playable at any time, as many in a row as you like. Today's five lots are free and always will be, with no account and no prompt. An archive round is scored and shareable but never touches your streak and is never posted to a leaderboard.

How do I manage or cancel my subscription?

Subscriptions are billed through your Apple Account. Open Apple's subscription settings (or Settings → your name → Subscriptions on your iPhone) to change or cancel. Cancelling keeps the archive open until the end of the paid period.

I subscribed on another phone. How do I get the archive back?

Open the archive and tap Restore purchase. Make sure the device is using the same Apple Account that paid for it.

I lost my streak.

A streak counts consecutive days on which you finished the daily round, and it is stored only on the device. Deleting the app, or clearing its storage, clears it with no way for us to restore it — we hold no copy of it, and there is no account it could be attached to.

The leaderboards say they are unavailable.

Leaderboards are Apple Game Center, on iPhone only, and they need Game Center to be signed in on the device. Check Settings → Game Center. Everything else in the game works normally without it, and your round is always saved on the device before it is posted anywhere.

Does it work offline?

Yes, entirely. The day's lots come from the date on your device, so a plane is fine. Only posting a leaderboard score and buying or restoring the subscription need a connection.
